Stepmom Life: 3 Tips to Embrace This Beautiful Role

I’ve been a stepmom for over five years. It is a role that isn’t for the faint of heart.

When I felt lost and alone, I found a few resources to be helpful.

  1. StepMom Magazine- I purchased a year subscription to the magazine as a place to learn and absorb tips and tricks that might work for me. Every stepmom’s story is unique and important.
  2. Therapy- I found a new therapist as I had outgrown my previous one. I was in need of additional support as a looming custody change was about to occur. I have been to therapy many times through my life and it has proven to bring out my resilience and grit.
  3. Find Community- I am a proud member of a Greek sorority and my sisterhood and relationships stretch across the country. I found two women that are also stepmoms and although our situations differ in many ways, they are similar too. I have celebrated Stepmom’s Day with them for the past two years on a video call as we are living in different states. We try to meet every few months to offer support, share stories and remind ourselves that we GET to be stepmoms. We have a unique role that’s different than the child’s parents. How beautiful is it that we get to define our role and how we show up for our stepkid(s).

If I could tell other stepmoms one thing, it’s hang in there. It’s worth the drama and heartbreak. You can rise above challenges and be there for your stepkid. You get to control what you think, say and do. There are resources and people willing to help you along this journey, you just have to ask. I have found my community and peace as I continue to evolve as a stepparent. I’m learning along the way. No matter what, one thing stays true, I show up for my stepkid. He knows I love him and want the best for him and to keep him safe when Dad isn’t there. I am an extension of his Dad. You’ve got this stepmom, now go out there and live the fulfilling life you deserve.

My Beloved Simplified Planner

With a messy life, you need some sort of our tool to help you manage it all. I came upon Emily Ley and The Simplified Planner about six years from a college friend. Man do I love a paper planner. My first year it was hard to write and cross out things as I was so proud of my thick 80lb paper and minimal perfect script. Fast forward to now, and you can see my planner is well used and loved. I might be considered the character Katharine Heigl plays in the movie 27 Dresses with her big bulky planner.

I love my planner and if sometime is important, it gets written down. I do try to transfer events to my Google calendar too by the week. You can see how worn the spine is and the white block used to say it was a Simplified Planner. There a papers I need to reference or keep track up popping out the side. This planner allows me to keep organized, get messy with ideas and potential events to remember and gives me a fresh start to show up for myself.

If you are looking for beautiful products for your desk and life, you can check Simplified at www.emilyley.com. You will not be disappointed.

I will be switching from a weekly version which is small to a larger Dapperdesk planner on August 1. A sweet transition as life continues to get busy with trips, work commitments and trying to start a family.
